Rabid Bat Found Outside School, 15 Students Seen 'Near Or Playing With It'

Families of Manor Independent School District Students were notified on Wednesday about a rabid bat near Lagos Elementary School.

Manor ISD wrote in a tweet on Wednesday, "Administrators at @LagosElementary School were notified that several scholars at the campus may have come in close contact with a rabid bat. District established procedures to remove the bat were immediately followed."

As a result of the incident, Manor Police are trying to contact the families of the 15 kindergarten students who were seen near it or playing with it.

According to Manor Police, a video from the district shows the students around the bat at 9 a.m. on Monday morning.

The families of the students that encountered the animal were notified and referred to a physician, according to Manor Independent School District.

The school's campus will be screened and inspected by trained personnel to look for more bats or pests, reports KXAN. Families will be notified if any additional animals are found.

In addition to the case of the rabid bat, Lagos Elementary was also shut down earlier this week due to a positive COVID-19 case in a campus staff member.

Parents who are questioning their child's exposure to the rabid bat are being asked to call the assistant director of Health services and Wellness at (512) 278-4093 and Manor Animal Control at (512) 230-8348.
