'Massive' Interstate-10 Widening Planned For Maricopa County

The Arizona Department of Transportation has selected a portion of Interstate 10 in Phoenix to be reconstructed.

The objective of the project is to improve an 11-mile stretch of Interstate-10 that runs between Interstate-17 and Route 202, southeast of downtown Phoenix.

The project will widen Interstate-10 to six general-purpose lanes and two high-occupancy vehicle lanes. There will also be collector-distributor road system built.

Interstate-10's connections with state Route 143, Broadway Road, and U.S. Route 60 will be altered, and there will be three pedestrian bridges added to connect communities.

According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, about 300,000 vehicles travel through Interstate-10's Broadway Curve corridor on an average weekday, and that figure is expected to increase to 375,000 by 2040.

Phoenix Mayor and chair of the Maricopa Association of Governments Katie Gallego stated, "This project will improve safety and efficiency for hundreds of thousands of drivers who travel through the Broadway Curve each weekday and generate $658 million in new economic activity."

Arizona Governor Doug Ducey stated, "Arizona continues to build the infrastructure of the future and strengthen our transportation network. When completed, this project will help power Arizona's economic expansion and reduce travel times for hundreds of thousands of commuters."
