In a new interview with the LA Times, Cazzie David discussed her upcoming essay collection titled No One Asked For This. In the book, as well as the interview, David opened up about her split from Pete Davidson publicly for the first time.
For those who may have forgotten, David and Davidson dated for more than two years before the Saturday Night Live star made headlines for his whirlwind romance with Ariana Grande. As David tells it, she found out about Davidson and Grande's relationship the same way the rest of the world did—on Instagram. She told the LA Times Davidson broke up with her via text just one day before going public with Grande.
According to David, she had put her relationship with Davidson on hold just before he started seeing Grande. When she called Davidson two days into their break to tell him she'd made a mistake and didn't want space, the comedian reportedly told his ex he was now "the happiest he'd ever been." Another two days later, Davidson ended things for good with David in a text. Less than 24 hours later, he was Instagram official with his soon-to-be fiance.
Though David kept pretty quiet publicly about the situation at the time, she told the outlet about how difficult it really was for her to see Davidson move on so quickly. She says she "shook uncontrollably" in her dad's arms while on a flight to her sister's graduation shortly after the news broke. David also revealed she kept replaying "audio of [Grande's] baby voice whispering sweet nothings in his ear, dubbed over his past declarations of love" to her.
"It was a really pivotal moment in my life," she shared. "And writing about it has caused me a ton of anxiety, especially because I talk so much about hating the attention it brought me. Why would I bring more attention to myself by writing about it? But there's nothing that's gonna be worse than what I already experienced with that."
Despite their falling out back in 2018, David and Davidson are friends again. The comedian read the essay about him that will be included in David's book, as well. David even gave him a shoutout in the collection's acknowledgements, writing: "Pete. I love you. Your bravery inspires me and your friendship means the world to me."
