Dallas Officer Who Responds To Mental Health Calls Won Officer Of The Year

At an annual awards banquet, one Dallas officer who goes above and beyond when it comes to mental health crises was recognized.

Aaron Rucker from the South Central Patrol Division was named 'Officer of the Year.'

Rucker has won ten commendations and one life-saving award.

The officer has a master's degree in social work and bachelor's degree in psychology, which he puts to good use at the department.

He is a part of a team that responds to mental health calls and puts a focus on bringing awareness to mental health issues in the Dallas community.

He told Fox 4 News, "Quite often we get calls regarding mental health whether it is a family member or they just don't know or don't have the resources. So we’re actually able to come to them."

He said that his experiences have helped in to train new officers as well.

"I want people to know that not just me but we all care and love our society and we do our best to make sure that everyone is safe. So I’m grateful that the Dallas Police Department allows me to be a resource to help others. I just truly love what I do and I like to allow my heart to speak for my work," he said.
