Self-driving car companies are seeing Las Vegas as way to make advancements in their industry.
Operators are hitting the breaks for the time being on completely driverless cars for safety, but a new round of autonomous vehicles are making their way to the state.
A new fleet of driverless cars are rolling to Vegas to be tested on a completely driverless, closed course.
The new company, "Motional," is testing autonomous cars in Nevada. According to the company, the completely driverless cars will be tested on closed courses in the state for the next few months. Karl Iagnemma, the president and CEO of the company, said that Nevada has given Motional "permission to remove the driver from our vehicles."
Iagnemma wrote in a blog post, "Our upcoming driverless milestone is the result of extraordinary innovation from some of the brightest minds in technology, and the product of exceptional care and a relentless commitment to safety."
Rides from driverless cars have already been available for purchase through Lyft.
The service has reported 100,000 driverless local rides since 2018.
While these rides may not have had a driver behind the wheel, there was still a human safety operator in the vehicle, ready to take over if anything went awry.
