Dozens of cats were removed from a Washington state home, according to KOMO. This is the second large-scale hoarding situation in the the Yakima County in the past month, the website added.
Reporters said a county animal control officer was sent to an elderly homeowner's residence in the 700 block of North 15th Street on Wednesday, November 4. Forty-seven live cats, 12 carcasses and multiple remains “only identifiable as feline anatomy" were removed from the house. The residence is also slated for demolition, they added.
The cats were moved to the cat sanctuary at Pasado's Safe Haven, an animal rescue nonprofit located near Monroe. KOMO said they're being treated for lung infections and other ailments.
“We are thankful we were able to get them out when we did, and get them the food and medical treatment he so desperately needed,” Pasado’s said in a press release. According to the nonprofit, the cats in need of medical care will be placed with fosters. The healthy cats will be available for adoption soon, they added.
According to the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office, cat hoarding situations are not the norm for the county. Deputies said there have been only four or five such incidents in the past 20 years.
No charges were filed against the homeowner.
