Colorado Teen Scientist Named TIME's First 'Kid Of The Year'

TIME magazine is known for their annual selection of "Person of the Year," but this year the outlet decided to name a "Kid of the Year" as well.

15-year-old Gitanjali Rao from Colorado has been named TIME's 2020 "Kid of the Year." She is the first person to receive this title.

The Lone Tree native was selected from a field of more than 5,000 American kids ranging from ages 8 to 16.

"These are everyday kids making change in their communities in a fun and accessible- but very impactful- way," said TIME for Kids editor Andrea Delbanco.

"Exceptional leadership" is what made Colorado's Rao, who is a scientist and inventor, stand out.

Rao researches scientific tools like artificial intelligence and carbon nanotube sensor technology. She applies them to relevant issues like water contamination and cyberbullying.

One of her latest innovations is called Kindly. An app and Chrome extension that is able to detect cyberbullying at an early stage using AI technology.

The title came with her own cover page on the iconic magazine and an interview with acclaimed actress and activist Angelina Jolie.

Rao will also be featured on TIME's Kid of the Year broadcast special airing on December 4 at 7:30 P.M. ET on Nickelodeon.
