Fremont Street Won't Host Annual New Year's Eve Party Due To COVID-19

December 31 will be a much quieter day on Fremont Street.

The Fremont Street Experience did not receive permission to host its New Year's Eve celebration due to the surging number of COVID-19 cases.

“We submitted our plans for a New Year’s Eve event over a month ago prior to the current surge in COVID-19 cases. It is our understanding that currently no permits for large gatherings have been approved by the state. Fremont Street Experience is unique in that we are a public street and we will evaluate all our options regarding New Year’s Eve with our top priority being the health and safety of our guests, partners and employees," the organization said in a statement.

Plans submitted by the Fremont Street Experience estimated that around 10,000 people would attend the celebration if allowed, the Las Vegas Review Journal reported.

Under current state guidelines, large events are capped at 50 people, but that restriction is set to expire before New Year's Eve.

The Strip's New Year's Eve fireworks show was also canceled back in October because of the pandemic.

So far, the Plaza hotel and casino downtown is still planning on hosting a New Year's Eve fireworks show, ABC 13 reported.
