High school football is sacred in Texas so when law enforcement shows up to take a player off the field, something has gone south.
That's what happened on Thursday night at a game in Edinburg, Texas, between Edinburg senior defensive lineman Emmanuel Duron had to be escorted by police out of the stadium after hitting a referee.
Duron was ejected during the game against Pharr-San Juan Alamo High School for a late hit on the quarterback and unsportsmanlike conduct, which was made after Duron "exchanged words" with referee Fred Garcia after the play, The Monitor in McAllen, Texas, reported.
The lineman was walking to the sidelines after the play, but after Garcia announced the player's ejection, Duron ran back and knocked Garcia over.
Medical personnel at the game examined Garcia for potential injuries and a concussion. The referee did not return to the game.
Duron was escorted out of the stadium by four Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District police officers.
Neither the Edinburg CISD Police Department or Edinburg High School commented about the incident.
“I can’t release any information on that and I apologize for that. I hope you understand," Edinburg High head football coach JJ Lejia told The Monitor after the game. "I want this (game) to be about our program and all the other kids we had on the field tonight.”
