'Life Or Death': Gov. Cooper Gives Warning After Spike In COVID Cases

North Carolina set a new record, twice, over the weekend for single-day increase in new coronavirus cases. On Saturday, the state saw 6,018 new cases, but Sunday topped that number with 6,438. Gov. Roy Cooper and Dr. Mandy Cohen may soon introduce new actions to help slow the spread of the virus.

"After a steady increase in numbers, we've broken another case record [Saturday] with 6,018 new cases," Gov. Cooper said on Twitter. "We're examining what action may be needed to protect North Carolinians, but we need everyone to wear masks and follow safety measures. Our actions right now are life or death."

Cooper has previously issued restrictions limiting gatherings and requiring masks indoors while around people who are not from the same household. However, these restrictions are set to expire at the end of the week. With the spike in cases, as well as the record number of people hospitalized, it is probably Cooper will announce new limitations.

After Sunday's record-breaking case count, Cooper doubled-down on his message of safety and responsibility.

"If we don't slow this trend, more North Carolinians will die," he said Monday on Twitter. "We have the power to slow the spread of this virus. We must take personal responsibility and honor guidelines & orders to stop COVID-19."
