Full City Rooster Coffee Roasting Studio in Dallas's Cedars neighborhood is offering a little more than coffee these days.
Customers who come in for a fresh cup of espresso or iced coffee are offered much more.
Next to the service bar are boxes of Narcan, the medical-use nasal spray that is used as an antidote to opioid overdose. A sign reads, "FREE Narcan."
This is all in an effort to spread its use.
Owner Michael Wyatt stated, "It is an epidemic, and it was before the pandemic. I see it as life-saving and a life-changing event. People have said they didn’t need it, then come back wanting to have it, if they need it."
The drug is administered to a person that has overdosed on an opioid drug, including methamphetamine, heroin, fentanyl, and others.
Dallas Harm Reduction Aid member Candace Starns said, "Our goal is everyone carry it. You can save a life, and give them another chance."
The drug is a nasal spray, and the DHRA recommends that individuals carry the spray with them for emergencies.
DHRA volunteer Abby Brown said, "This can happen to anyone. We've all seen it. We have something that saves lives, why not have it on you, why not carry it."
