Jeffco Parents Hold Car Rally To Get Students Back In Classrooms Next Month

Jefferson County parents are coming together to urge their district to resume in-person learning in 2021.

The rally was inspired by Denver Public School's recent unveiling of their plan to bring students back to classrooms next year.

DPS will phase students into in-person learning throughout the month of January. By February 1, all students who have chosen to return to in-person learning will be back in school.

"We believe this timeline prioritizes students who need in-person learning most, while also giving schools the opportunity to plan and prepare for a full-scale return to in-person learning," the district stated in an announcement to families.

Now parents from Jefferson County are asking the district to implement a similar schedule for bringing students back to classrooms.

Parents and students filled up the parking lot at Jeffco Public Schools Administrative offices during the "Insist on January 6th" car rally for in-person learning.

The parade of cars roller through the Jefferson County Education Association office and then to Jeffco Public Health offices, according to CBS4.

"I just feel like it's best for my kids to be in school," one Jeffco parent, Amy Doty, told CBS4. "They're falling behind and I'm concerned about it."

"The community is at a breaking point," said rally organizer Lindsay Datko. "...We need an immediate start for the mental health of our children."

In a released statement to CBS4, Jeffco Public Schools stated they "are fully committed to return to in-person learning in January. How that plan rolls out is still being determined in detail."
