Poll: Michigan Voters Support Gov. Whitmer, Masks In Public Amid Pandemic

Most registered voters who participated in a Michigan survey approve of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s response during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The Detroit Regional Chamber announced the findings of its statewide poll on Tuesday (December 15). The Chamber commissioned Glengariff Group Inc. to poll 600 voters from November 30 through December 4.

Findings show that 63.3% of voters “believe Gov. Whitmer is aggressively working on getting the pandemic under control and protecting public health,” a Detroit Regional Chamber press release states.

Results show that 82.7% of Michiganders believe that the pandemic is the same or worse than it was in April.

The survey also shows that most Michiganders support wearing masks — even supporting a mask requirement — and most support vaccinations, among many other findings.

“As we mark the ninth month of the pandemic, promising news on vaccine distribution, and the Governor temporarily reimposing business restrictions, the Chamber wanted to assess how voters feel about Michigan’s health, economy, and political situation,” Sandy K. Baruah, president and CEO of the Detroit Regional Chamber, said in the release. “Similar to our statewide polls in April and May, voters are sending a clear message that public health measures are essential to beating the pandemic and that the public health crisis and business restrictions are harming our economy.”

“This poll also highlighted a series of new concerns for Michigan voters,” Baruah added. “Voters were clear that government leaders need to support small businesses, keep manufacturing open, and do more to find a bipartisan consensus to stop the pandemic.”
