A bottle containing a note dated 126 years ago was recently discovered inside the wall of a Boston home.
A local resident found the bottle hidden in a space between their fireplace flue and an interior wall of the home in the Back Bay near Commonwealth area, the City of Boston Archaeology Program announced on its Facebook account Monday (December 14.)
The agency shared a photo of the note inside a bottle of "N. Simons" Rye Whiskey and unrolled addressed to "Tom Ford" with the phrase "6 on Shea" dated September 23, 1894.
"We have a mystery for the hive mind this week! A Boston resident found this amazing message in a bottle tucked into the space between their fireplace flue and an interior wall, presumably placed there by past builders. The home is located in Back Bay near Commonwealth Avenue. Anybody have any ideas about N. Simons, Tom Ford, or “6 on Shea?” Let us know in the comments! #Boston #archaeology #messageinabottle #BackBay"
The "N. Simons" label states "Importer and Wholesale Liquor Dealer" and includes the address "31 & 33 Castle Street, Boston."
One Facebook user responded to the City of Boston Archaeology Program's post claiming the note proved evidence of secretive "drinking and gambling." Another user suggested it was referencing a short-lived 1894 soccer league, which featured Dennis Shea as one of the team's captains.
The City of Boston Archaeology Program has not determined the origin or meaning of the note as of Wednesday (December 16) afternoon.
