Russell Dickerson Surprises Fan Paralyzed In Car Accident With Special Gift

Russell Dickerson is making one young fan's Christmas so much brighter this year.

Over the summer, Sarah Frei, a 17-year-old high school student in Utah, was driving with her friends when they were hit head-on by a drunk driver. Sarah was paralyzed from the waist down in the crash and had both of her legs amputated.

While in the hospital recovering, Frei's cheerleading squad surprised her with a routine set to Dickerson's "Home Sweet," which is her favorite song. When the country star heard Frei's story, he knew he wanted to do something special for her.

"To see the joy, and to see the zeal for life still that she had...it just drew me in and captured me, and I was in," the country star explains. Dickerson decided to partner with Chevrolet to surprise Frei with a 2021 Chevrolet Traverse, fully equipped with amenities to suit her needs, including maximized cabin space and a fully-powered and lighted ramp.

"My manager told me, one of the first things Sarah said when she got out of surgery was, ‘Will I ever be able to drive again?’” Dickerson continues. "I was like, ‘What can we do to just absolutely make her life? How can we just blow her mind?'"

The singer unveiled the exciting news during a surprise Zoom call with Frei and her mom.

"The story alone, but also the joy on your face when you were doing that dance to 'Home Sweet,' and the joy on your face after what you had just experienced, that is what just rocked my world," Dickerson told Frei. "And then, for you to be so determined to get out in time to get on that football field and perform with your cheer squad, that's just the definition of determination, and I'm so glad that 'Home Sweet' could be such a song of hope and joy for you."

"Home Sweet" comes from the singer’s sophomore album, Southern Symphony, which came out this month.
