Disabled residents living in Denver were unable to leave their apartments at the Renaissance Uptown Lofts after out of order elevators left them stuck for multiple days.
The residents affected contacted FOX31's Problem Solvers for help.
"If we are handicapped, we can't get out of here," one resident Dorothy Tietz told FOX31. "We can't get fresh air. I'd like to go out and take my do out at least."
According to Tietz, she had been stuck on the fifth floor of the building since Saturday, January 2.
Her nurse told reporters she also witnessed another wheelchair-bound resident stuck in the lobby on Monday morning (January 4).
"He's in a wheelchair, he doesn't walk, he was in a puddle of urine, feces, I saw it," said the nurse. "I was very, very upset. I told her this is the last straw."
After the newsgroup requested calls for service involving the building's elevator issues from Denver Fire Department, they found that crews had to shut power to both elevators on January 2 after a man called stating he could not get up to his apartment.
Both elevators reportedly had defects and a company was needed to fix them.
At 4:00 P.M. Monday, January 4, a spokesperson for the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless, which is in charge of the housing complex, said both elevators are now fixed.
