A Miami man had a great surprise in the new year.
Local 10 reported that 67-year-old Rodrigo Quesada scored a $1 million prize from the $5,000,000 Cashword scratch-off game. Quesada took home a one-time, lump-sum payment of $780,000. According to Florida Lottery officials, Cashword is a $20 game that features eight top prizes of $5 million and 24 prizes of $1 million.
The Miami resident bought his winning ticket from the Stop N Shop at 9610 Fountainebleau Boulevard in Miami. The store also gets a $2,000 commission for selling the scratcher.
Last year, many South Florida residents got lucky with the lottery. Just before Christmas Eve, a Fort Lauderdale resident won $1 million from a $10 scratch-off, according to Local 10. A Pompano Beach woman hit a $1.5 million jackpot. Two Broward men got lucky around the same time, each of them winning $1 million.
A man from Jacksonville walked home with over $4 million after hitting $5 million -- and this is his second time winning big.
"According to Florida Lottery, scratch-offs make up about 75% of their ticket sales and generated more than $1 billion for the Educational Enhancement Trust Fund in fiscal year 2019-20," reporters wrote.
