Police are searching for suspects after a New Orleans woman was fatally shot on Sunday (January 3) while on her way to deliver groceries to her elderly in-laws.
According to The Times Picayune/New Orleans Advocate, 52-year-old Anita Leviege was driving near her in-laws' home in the Kenilworth neighborhood of New Orleans East around 5:30 p.m. when she was confronted by two male suspects. Police said the men, one of whom was armed with a rifle, walked in front of her car and fired several shots. Sources told the outlet that Leviege was on the phone with her in-laws at the time.
Leviege managed to drive away but crashed into another vehicle nearby. Sadly Leviege and a small dog inside the vehicle were shot at least once and died.
Police released images of two people needed for questioning but stressed they were not wanted suspects. Visit the department's website to view the photos.
According to WWLTV, police are investigating the possibility that the homicide was a failed carjacking after reports of a successful carjacking nearby an hour later. In that incident, it was reported that two people, one with a rifle, forced a woman to give them her car. As of Wednesday, police have yet to confirm the carjacking and Leviege's homicide were related.
New Orleans Police ask that anyone with information about the fatal shooting call Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111.
