Elon Musk may be interested in building an underground transportation network in Miami, Florida.
The announcement came about when the Tesla founder tweeted Monday (January 18) about batteries and sustainability. Miami Mayor Francis Suarez retweeted the post and invited him to city hall to discuss "potential solutions for the benefit of our future."
Here's what Musk had to say: "Cars & trucks stuck in traffic generate megatons of toxic gases & particulate, but [Boring Company] road tunnels under Miami would solve traffic & be an example to the world. Spoke with [Gov. Ron DeSantis] about tunnels last week. If Governor & Mayor want this done, we will do it."
The Next Miami said the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) had plans to build a tunnel for the I-395 replacement project through downtown Miami, but it was scrapped due to costs. A raised Signature Bridge was built, instead.
"An FDOT study claimed the cost to underground the highway would have been over $1.3 billion more than the bridge, bringing the cost to $2.1 billion instead of $800 million," reporters said. Officials also worried about shutting down these systems in the event of flooding or hurricanes.
Musk, who recently became the richest man in the world, may reach a breakthrough with tunnels by reducing the costs to build them in the U.S., according to Quartz. His Boring Company also expressed interest in building tunnel loops under Las Vegas.
