A Sacramento city council member confirmed that one homeless person was killed during Tuesday night's storm.
Katie Valenzuela, who represents Sacramento's 4th district, tweeted that a person within her district died.
"I'm beyond grief-striken [sic]... I'm angry," Valenzuela wrote on Twitter. "We can and MUST do better for our neighbors."
Sacramento police confirmed that the homeless person was a woman in her 50s, according to CBS13. She was found unresponsive in a tent by 26th and W streets around 6:00 A.M. on Wednesday, January 27.
Medics pronounced her dead at the scene.
According to police, no foul play is suspected but the official cause of her death will be investigated by the Sacramento County Coroner's office.
The night before the woman's death, Mayor Darell Steinberg had an emotional outburst at a council meeting over the lack of warming centers for the storm.
"People are gonna die tonight," said Steinberg.
According to CBS13, Steinberg criticized the county's rules that apparently prevent the city from opening a warming center for more than one night.
After the woman's death was announced Steinberg called for an emergency Sacramento City Council meeting on Wednesday afternoon.
By declaring a local emergency Steinberg said the city would be able to open a shelter every night until winter is over.
