Another South Florida city is pondering the idea of underground tunnels to improve traffic, according to NBC Miami.
Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis revealed Wednesday (January 28) that the city's been speaking with The Boring Company, owned by Tesla founder Elon Musk, about project ideas. He said the tunnel could address traffic issues and promote South Florida as a tech hub.
"It’s not just about Fort Lauderdale. This will be an initial project. This will be just a start. The possibilities are endless," Trantalis said. "We can have East-West commuter lines going out to the suburbs. We can have lines going out to the beach where people don’t have to park at the beach, they can park downtown, eliminating the crowding we often see. It’s a game changer."
The proposed tunnel would run three miles under the New River, and projected costs would be at minimum $10 million per mile.
Last week, Miami mayor Francis Suarez invited Musk to the Magic City to discuss "potential solutions" to benefit the city. Musk said he already spoke with Gov. Ron DeSantis about the ideas.
"Cars & trucks stuck in traffic generate megatons of toxic gases & particulate, but @boringcompany road tunnels under Miami would solve traffic & be an example to the world," Musk tweeted. “If Governor & Mayor want this done, we will do it."
According to reporters, nothing has been set in stone for either South Florida city. Trantalis said the next step will be to have representatives from Boring come to check out the ground topography.
