'Race Me Or Die' Driver Goes On Hit-And-Run Rampage Around Downtown Denver

A series of hit-and-runs took place near downtown Denver on Saturday morning (January 30) after police were called out to a Burger King.

According to arrest documents obtained by KDVR, police had responded to a disturbance at the Burger King on 1010 W. Colfax Ave. at about 8:30 A.M. The suspect, 23-year-old Tyler Hazell, had fled the scene before they arrived.

Officials say that Hazell reached a traffic light on W. Colfax Avenue and Delaware Street and then proceeded to drive backward in the wrong direction for two blocks. Then, he stopped next to two women in a black Honda Civic and reportedly told them "Race me or die."

The women tried to drive away from him but Hazell followed them and crashed into the back of their car. According to the document, he kept following them and rammed the side of their car several more times.

Hazell also drove onto a sidewalk on W. 14th Avenue and attempted to run over two men walk. After following them, he eventually hit one of them, fracturing the man's pelvis and leg.

He then drove back onto W. 14th Avenue in the wrong direction and stopped to high five a transient and take a picture, according to the arrest documents.

Hazell then hit the side of a moving Denver police car injuring an officer and prisoner, and hit another Denver police car and injuring another officer.

Hazell returned to the parking lot of the Burger King on Colfax and rammed into an empty parked truck.

Officers attempted to stop Hazell in the parking lot, but he fled again.

Eventually, Hazell was removed from his vehicle at gunpoint on Quebec Parkway.

Hazell has a felony warrant and is facing a first-degree assault charge.
