A Sacramento pizzeria donated free pizza to homeless students in the area on National Pizza Day.
Pizza Guys donated 40 pizzas to Mustard Seed School students who are experiencing homelessness.
The Mustard Seed School is a free private school for children 3 to 15 years-old who are experiencing homelessness in the Sacramento area. While the children have a safe space to learn, their parents access other services on the Loaves & Fishes campus.
The director of the school, Casey Knittel, told KCRA3 she was happy to receive the donation from Pizza Guys.
"There's still kids out there in this pandemic experiencing homelessness living in cars, living in motels and tents, unfortunately," said Knittel. "So being able to do something special for them is very meaningful."
The Pizza Guys donation was enough to make sure every student at the school was able to receive their own personal pizza.
David Cheng from the restaurant told KCRA3 there was no better way to celebrate the national holiday than to give back to those in need, especially during the pandemic.
Pizza shops around the country shared Cheng's sentiment this year. In addition to sales and specials, many restaurants chose to celebrate the day by donating slices or pies to their local shelters and food banks.
