Puget Sound Saw Record-Breaking Snowfall Over The Weekend

The Puget Sound region made history amidst record-breaking snowfall over the Valentine's Day weekend, according to sources.

Reporters learned that 8.9 inches of snow fell in the Seattle area on Saturday (February 13), the most the city had seen on a February day in nearly a century. It's also the snowiest day in the Emerald City in any month in 52 years.

"Combined between Friday and Saturday, that was also the most snow the Seattle area had seen over a two-day period in 49 years," MyNorthwest wrote.

The National Weather Service in Seattle added that Friday (February 12) and Saturday "ended up with the 15th highest 2 consecutive days snow total in over 125 years of records." Reporters added that the Seattle area saw 12.4 total inches of snow in February so far this year.

The weekend snowstorm also led to multiple reported collisions and traffic accidents. The "State Patrol responded to 386 collisions between Friday and Monday in King County alone, a 300% increase from two weekends ago over that same period of time," according to MyNorthwest.

This may be the last time the area will see major snow outside of the Cascades this winter, according to Cliff Mass, who is a professor of atmospheric sciences at the University of Washington.

“Enjoy the snow … it is beautiful, and will probably be the last lowland snow event this season,” he predicts.
