In preparation of the winter weather and ice storm heading to North Carolina, Gov. Roy Cooper has issued a State of Emergency. The storm is expected to hit the state Wednesday night, WCNC reports, with ice accumulation along trees and power lines potentially causing widespread power outages.
Gov. Cooper's declaration allows utility companies to bring in repair crews from outside of North Carolina to help restore any lost power more quickly. He also activated 40 National Guard personnel to support any fallen tree and debris removal.
"This forecast for icy weather is a real threat for widespread power outages," said Cooper. "People need to be ready to stay home and be prepared to lost power for a while, especially in the northern, western, and Piedmont counties."
Duke Energy projects around 1 million power outages could occur across the Carolinas, but the company said it has over 5,400 workers and contractors ready to respond to reported outages. If possible, residents should prepare for an emergency before the storm hits in case the power is knocked out. According to the governor's office, around 30,000 gallons of brine were placed along roads in the Triangle, Piedmont Triad, Charlotte area, and mountains, especially along major highways, bridges, and overpasses. Additionally, transportation crews will work throughout the night to clear roadways if necessary.
