2 Coyotes Spotted On Local University Campus, Officials Urging Caution

Two coyotes were spotted on the University of Utah campus this weekend, reported KSL.

University officials say the coyotes were spotted chasing a deer.

The wild animals were seen around 8 p.m. on Saturday evening headed toward Red Butte Canyon, according to officials.

The university wrote in a campus alert, "Those on campus or visiting the Red Butte Canyon area should be cautious and aware of their surroundings, especially if accompanied by pets."

According to the alert, any students who "have an encounter with an aggressive animal" are being urged to call 9-1-1 or alert the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources.

Wild Aware Utah gave some tips for those who encounter a coyote. Here are the recommendations:

  • Do not approach the animals.
  • Make noise while walking or hiking to alert the animals of your presence.
  • Carry small pets.
  • Make loud noises- stomp your feet, throw rocks or sticks if necessary to frighten the animals away.
  • Do not run or turn your back on a coyote that has approached you. Always face the animal, shout at it, and be as loud as possible.
  • Wave your arms and back away slowly.
