It's no secret that many Utah residents travel across the Idaho border to play the Powerball. However, that is coming to an end, reported 2KUTV.
Idaho Lottery officials said that the change is taking place because Powerball is expanding to include Australia in 2021 and Britain in 2022. Current Idaho law only allows US and Canada residents to play.
Idaho lawmakers are fearing the foreign participation in the Powerball, so they killed legislation on Wednesday that would have allowed the Powerball to continue.
The state of Idaho was one of the first states to join Powerball in the 1990s, and it has since grown to include 45 states, two US territories, and Washington D.C.
Because the legislation was killed in a 10-4 vote, the last Powerball drawing in the state will take place in August.
Republican Rep. Heather Scott is worried that with Australia joining the Powerball, officials may use the revenue to support things that she opposes. She said that it could happen "in Australia anti-gun causes, which they see as good and we see as not good."
Some of the lawmakers said that they feared adding more players would reduce the odds of a local resident winning.
The biggest Powerball winner in Idaho was a resident of the small city of Star. The resident won $220 million in 2005.
