Judge Jeffrey Middleton called out a Michigan man for being “dumb enough” to call into his virtual court appearance from the driver’s seat of a vehicle.
The problem?
The man had his license suspended.
He was apparently being sentenced after officials charged him with no insurance and driving on a suspended license, according to WXYZ. Prosecutors say the man was driving his Ford Taurus about 75 miles per hour on a country road with a car full of occupants, including three children. One of them was not properly restrained in the car.
"I believe you drove wherever you are in the vehicle you’re in and you’re dumb enough to go on video with you sitting in the driver’s seat of a vehicle,” Middleton told the man. “Makes me think you haven’t gotten the message.”
The man told the judge that he did not drive. He was simply sitting in his boss’ car so he didn’t call into his court appearance while he was at someone else’s house, according to WXYZ. The man will pay fines and serve a two-day jail sentence.
Middleton said he'd "take it on faith" that the man was in his boss' vehicle.
The hearing was streamed live on YouTube on March 8.
