The University of Utah has canceled spring break for 2021, according to ABC 4.
The university's academic calendar shows that the mid-term break, originally scheduled for March 7th through 14th, was canceled due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs for the university, Dan Reed, told ABC 4:
"We know how much our students, faculty and staff depend on mid-term breaks to rest and recharge for the rest of the semester. And we understand the stress all of us are feeling as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic."
He added that the university is urging those in the campus community to "remain vigilant as vaccinations increase and hospitalizations and infections stabilize in out community."
The University of Utah released a statement that said:
"Although the development of therapeutics to treat and vaccines to curb the virus offer hope for a return to more routine school functions in the future, the academic calendar for spring semester still will be compressed in an effort to reduce the chances for exposure."
To make up for the cancellation, the university made changes including beginning the semester one week later than usual, adding a two-week, online-only education period for the first 14 days of March, and adding two non-instructional days in the semester.
