Tesla Strikes Michigan State Patrol Car While On Autopilot

Michigan State Police confirmed that a Lansing man crashed his Tesla into a patrol car in the early-morning hours Wednesday (March 17).

The Tesla appeared to be on autopilot, authorities said.

Troopers from the Lansing Post were investigating an accident — a driver hit a deer — on Interstate 96 near Waverly Road in Eaton County. It happened around 1:12 a.m., according to a tweet from the Michigan State Police First District.

“While investigating that crash with their emergency lights on, a Tesla on autopilot strikes the patrol car,” the Michigan State Police stated. “No injuries to troopers or anyone involved. Driver of the Tesla, a 22 year old man from Lansing was issued citations for failure to move over and DWLS.”

That accident comes days after another Tesla driver crashed under a semi-truck in Detroit. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration confirmed that it’s investigating the “violent crash” that left two people critically injured, according to an Associated Press story shared by Fox 2 Detroit on Tuesday (March 16).

The man who was driving and the woman who was a passenger were both transported to a hospital. The woman was in critical condition and the man’s condition was not immediately known, according to the Associated Press.
