There’s a Wisconsin mayor who’s apparently determined to memorialize RoboCop with a statue in his town.
Mayor Mike Wiza is making the case for an 11-foot statue inspired by the 1987 action/sci-fi film should end up in of Stevens Point, Wisconsin.
RoboCop was directed by Paul Verhoeven and starred Peter Weller. “In a dystopic and crime-ridden Detroit, a terminally wounded cop returns to the force as a powerful cyborg haunted by submerged memories,” the synopsis reads.
Fittingly, a sculptor based on Detroit, Michigan, crowd-funded a project and built an 11-foot bronze statue inspired by RoboCop. It was supposed to go to the Michigan Science Center, but the science center had a change of plans, according to Route Fifty, a Government Executive Media Group digital publication.
Hearing that the Michigan Science Center rejected the statue, Wiza — an apparent fan of the movie, as he recently shared on Facebook — sparked an idea: bring it to Stevens Point. If not Michigan, bring it to the place where Weller grew up, he thought, according to Route Fifty.
A Detroit filmmaker involved in the project told Wiza that they likely have a new home for the RoboCop statue in Michigan, but Wiza insisted they keep him in mind.
Considering some options, Wiza reportedly believes the RoboCop statue would make a nice touch to a public square, city hall, or even its own space, according to Route Fifty.
“If this 11-foot statue in Detroit falls through, and they decide to keep it in Detroit, I think we should make ours 12 feet tall,” he told the publication. “Some cities have tanks or cannons in their town square. We’d like to have RoboCop.”
