This year alone, Las Vegas has seen a massive increase in car thefts compared to last year, reported KTNV.
According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, there has already been a 21 percent increase in the number of stolen vehicles compared to last year.
The largest theft increase was seen in the Southeast and Spring Valley Area Commands.
The department said that most of the thefts happen on Monday and Tuesday nights, generally between and 8:00 and 11:00 p.m.
Ford F Series trucks, Chevrolet Silverado trucks, Dodge Ran trucks, Honda Civics, and Honda Accords are currently the hot ticket targets for vehicle thefts.
To protect yourself from car thefts, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is urging residents to lock their cars and look into devices that could save your car from thefts, if your vehicle isn't already protected.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration suggests the following theft deterrent devices:
- AUDIBLE AND VISIBLE DEVICES, such as horn alarms, steering-wheel locks, theft-deterrent decals, flashing lights, and window etching
- IMMOBILIZING-TYPE DEVICES, such as computer chips, which prevent thieves from bypassing the vehicle's ignition
- VEHICLE RECOVERY SYSTEMS, such as GPS devices that allow law enforcement to find the location of a stolen vehicle
If you fall victim to vehicle theft, contact police to file an official police report prior to driving it.
