Could San Diego Get A Major League Soccer Team?

There has been much speculation surrounding Major League Soccer's (MLS) expansion teams in California.

While the league initially announced in January that Sacramento would be entering the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), a new report by The Equalizer claims the NWSL expansion ownership group helmed by Ron Burkle is considering leaving Sacramento altogether.

The news of Burkle deciding to not to move forward as the lead investor of the expansion team in Sacramento broke back in February, but the new report by The Equalizer claims the billionaire is looking to move the team to San Diego.

Speculation about a move to San Diego comes multiple sources with knowledge about recent discussion between MLS and San Diego State University, reports ESPN.com.

According to these sources, MLS and SDSU have discussed a framework of a deal that would have an MLS expansion team play in Aztec Stadium which holds 35,000 fans and is projected to open in September 2022.

San Diego was previously an MLS expansion hopeful but those dreams were dashed in 2018 after a stadium referendum backed by FS Investors fell through, reports ESPN.com.

Despite all the speculation, nothing is official yet. There are several ways the move could play out, including a return to the Sacramento market if they are able to find another lead investor.
