Coronado's 4th of July fireworks show is a go for summer 2021.
On Thursday, April 22, city leaders approved purchasing fireworks for the July 4th celebration, reports KGTV.
However, a spokesperson for the city said the show could be canceled if anything changes in terms of the county's progress with the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2020, the Fourth of July Committee was given a $35,500 budget for holiday activities. The money was returned after the celebration was canceled due to COVID-19.
This year, the committee asked for a $48,500 grant with $33,200 allocated for purchasing fireworks.
According to the city, the state is expected to expire reopening restrictions in June if certain requirements are met.
If reopening restrictions do expire by then, the Fourth of July events would be allowed.
The city had to vote on Thursday because the deadline to notify the company that provides the fireworks needed to be notified by April 30, according to KGTV.
"Whether or not the health order will allow this type of very large gathering on July fourth is unknown. Nevertheless, the Fourth of July Committee has asked for parade entrants, with the understanding that there is the risk that the parade may not be held," reads the city's analysis. "City departments have been instructed to plan and staff for the event as if a traditional Coronado Fourth of July will be held. It is assumed that there will be significant demand to observe Fourth of July fireworks and participate in holiday events after the cancellation last year. Large crowds are expected."
