Denver Parents Frustrated With COVID Restrictions At Graduations

Several high schools throughout Colorado are aiming to hold in-person graduation ceremonies for the class of 2021.

However, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the ceremonies won't look like they did pre-pandemic. And families of graduating seniors are worried they won't be able to attend because of pandemic restrictions.

Some parents even find the restrictions for Colorado's graduation ceremonies to be too much, considering the loosened restrictions for other aspects of life in the state.

"Gyms are 100%, we're hosting an All-Star game, and yet we can only have two tickets per senior for graduation this year," Douglas County high school parent, Tiffany Hans, told CBS4.

While she is happy her son's school will be able to have a semi-normal graduation ceremony, Hans questions the state's guidance that limits the number of tickets each student is allowed.

“It’s been rough for them, they’ve had to go from being quarantined, to back to school in person, they’ve missed out on sporting events,” she continued.

A Public Information Officer for Douglas County School District told CBS4 that the district is in conversations with local and state health officials to see if they can pull of commencement ceremonies with minimal restrictions while still keeping families safe.

Hans hopes these changes will be made before graduation day, which is just a month away.

“I would just ask whoever is in charge to make it equal across the board, like if you’re going to open up these venues for restaurants and concerts, then open the venue for graduation where we can have more than two people per senior."
