Questlove's documentary Summer Of Soul has its first official trailer out! The just over a minute trailer was shared for the first time on Sunday during the Academy Awards.
The documentary Summer Of Soul will cover six weeks in the summer of 1969 from The Harlem Cultural Festival. The even celebrated Black history, music, culture and fashion. Footage from the festival was never seen but now the 'forgotten' festival will be able to get watched now! Musical acts like Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Sly & the Family Stone, Gladys Knight & the Pips and more will be featured in the film. Even with these amazing artists, it is not a concert film. The film will be a celebration of black pride, culture and music and although 300,000 people attended the festival this footage from it has been just sitting in a basement for 50 years. It's time to let it shine!
Questlove tells Variety “It’s a music documentary like no other, because while it’s a joyful, cataclysmic, and soulfully seductive concert movie, what it’s really about is a key turning point in Black life in America."
Summer of Soul will be Questlove's directorial debut. It had its world premiere in February at the Sundance Film Festival where it was awarded the U.S. Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award in the U.S. Documentary category. It can be seen by all starting July 2nd on Hulu.
