Denver Approves Changes For Plastic Utensils At Restaurants

Denver City Council approved an ordinance that will require restaurants to ask customers if they want single-use utensils and napkins in the future.

The change only affects people ordering takeout and was enacted to reduce waste in the city and help the environment by using less plastic and paper, reports FOX31.

Many restaurant owners are reportedly happy about the new measure because it would help them save money and the environment.

According to FOX31, these are the items that customers will now have to specifically ask for when ordering takeout from a Denver restaurant:

  • Plastic knives and forks
  • Straws
  • Napkins
  • Condiment packages (ketchup, mustard, etc.)

The city also announced that there will be a plastic bag fee. Customers will be charged ten cents per bag, encouraging them to start using reusable bags when shopping.

FOX31 reports there is still no set date for when the new single-use plastic measure will take effect. Details about how the city will enforce the new measure are still being worked out.
