Parts Of San Diego Being Overrun With Scooters Forces New Regulations

The city is taking action after growing complaints about scooter users riding recklessly through streets and sidewalks.

According to CBS8, there are currently six scooter companies with a total of around 10,000 scooters throughout the entire city.

While there were no limits on how many companies could compete in the city, that's about to change.

"What we are heading to is, 'Let's exert some control over the number of companies and actually limit the number of scooters,'" said San Diego City Council Member Joe LaCava (District 1).

City officials are still working out what exactly the new regulations will be but CBS8 reports that the city of San Diego would issue a request for proposals to the scooter companies and negotiate individual contracts with a limited number.

The chosen companies would then be required to abide by the revised set of safety regulations.

"I'm a strong believer in, If you are going to have regulations, have a mechanism to enforce that," LaCava told CBS8. "And the city hasn't quite figured that out yet."

The request-for-proposals could be released as soon as this summer meaning the decisions on which scooter companies are allowed to operate in San Diego would be made later this year.
