Scuba divers uncovered a series of pipe bombs settled at the bottom of the Chattahoochee River.
The divers made it back to shore and called 911. The bomb squad, Homeland Security and Park Rangers arrived to inspect and take possession of the pipe bombs.
Jeremy Sides recalled the experience to Fox 5 Atlanta, describing the “steel tube capped on both ends and I shook it and sounded like something dry was inside… [the bomb squad] determined it was enough of a threat they were going to treat it like a real bomb.”
It was quite a change of pace for the Acworth diver, 41, who typically finds jewelry, Civil War-era relics and other items, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution notes.
“We’re just trying to do our part picking up trash and cleaning up the environment,” diver Britain Lockhart told the Journal-Constitution. “Coming across this stuff, it’s a thrill, but it’s also very, very scary as well.”
This weekend, weeks after the first time he found a pipe bomb, Sides discovered two more lurking in the water. He was diving in the same area of the Chattahoochee River with Johnny Cannone, Fox 5 Atlanta reports.
Cannone recalled to the station: “I pulled them up and I can see the fuse hanging off them. I’m looking at them thinking there’s no way I found two pipe bombs.”
Again, bomb squads arrived at the scene and took the pipe bombs in their possession and military experts will examine them at Dobbins Air Reserve.
