Travelers at Denver International Airport found themselves dealing with delays after an Xcel Energy power outage and threats of bad weather affected flights.

Passengers told FOX31 the power went out just after 3:00 P.M. and Xcel had it restored before 3:45 P.M. on Wednesday, July 14.

“We understand that losing power, especially at a large facility like the airport, is an inconvenience. We appreciate our customers patience as we worked to resolve the issue as quickly and safely as possible,” Xcel said in a statement.

Some travelers experienced missed connections but were rebooked. DIA sees more than 1,700 flights daily and 80 of those flights were affected by the power outage.

According to the airport, flights that were in the air at the time of the outage were able to land, but flights that were coming into Denver that had yet to take off were held.

Some passengers had to remain in their seats on the runway for close to an hour.

“You’re sitting in this tiny little space, and you’re all cramped up. It’s just — you want to get out,” a passenger told FOX31.

More than 600 flights at DIA were delayed for various reasons on Wednesday afternoon.
