The Chicago Police Department is mourning one of its officers who was killed in the line of duty during a traffic stop over the weekend.
Officer Ella French, 29, died on Saturday (August 7). Her partner remains in the hospital with gunshot wounds.
“We will #NeverForget the true bravery she exemplified as she laid her life down to protect others,” the Chicago Police Department said of its fallen officer in a tweet on Sunday (August 8). “Please hold her family, loved ones and fellow Chicago Police officers in your thoughts as we grieve the loss of this hero.”
“Please also pray for her wounded partner, who is in the hospital fighting for his life,” the department added. “We're asking for everyone to lift up this officer and his family as we pray for his recovery.”
The wounded officer has worked since August 2014. He is married with a young child, according to ABC 7 Chicago. The station reports that French, her partner and another officer conducted a traffic stop on South Bell on Saturday when those in the vehicle and the officers exchanged fire. Police say the shooter was injured during the incident. Authorities believe a passenger of the vehicle fired at the officers. Three suspects are in custody, ABC 7 Chicago reported Monday (August 9).
