A family was carjacked and kidnapped by a man fleeing a shooting in Fresno County on Saturday, September 4, reports CNN.com.
Luckily, one of the children in the car was a quick thinker and figured out a way to save the family.
The incident started around noon at a house on the north edge of Selma. According to the Fresno County sheriff, Jorge Calleres, 39, of Parlier walked into the home of his ex-girlfriend and shot her.
After fleeing the scene, Calleres forced his way into the car that had a woman and four children inside and began driving north toward Fresno.
Calleres refused to let the family out of the car and that's when one of the children hatched a brilliant plan.
“One of the children was, from what I understand, very, very smart and actually faked an asthma attack,” said Fresno police chief Paco Balderrama. “The suspect pulled over and kicked the family out of the vehicle.”
The five were able to escape uninjured, according to CNN.
Calleres continued onto Fresno and soon after police received reports of a man acting erratically in a suburban neighborhood.
When officers arrived, they realized Calleres was high on drugs. Officers used a taser and handcuffs to subdue him but then noticed he was having trouble breathing.
An ambulance transported Calleres to a hospital where he died at around 2:00 P.M.
According to CNN, Fresno police are investigating the incident as an "in custody" death. The officers involved are on leave.
Additionally, the woman Calleres shot was in critical condition as of Sunday, September 5.
