Police officers in Oregon stripped themselves of their gear to help save a swimmer in trouble Wednesday (September 30) before dawn, KPIC reports.

Reporters say a 24-year-old woman and a friend went for a swim at South Umpqua River just before 4 a.m. Unfortunately, the woman "quickly went into distress and couldn't make it back to shore. The friend was unable to assist her, and called 911," officials say. "The area was very dark and the water was deep."

On top of that, the temperature was around 50 degrees at the airport that day, according to the National Weather Service.

But that didn't deter the Roseburg Police officers who responded to the scene. The cops reportedly removed their gear to dive into the water. Police say they could tell the woman was "exhausted, cold, and starting to go under the water."

One of the officers was able to swim back to shore, where medics and firefighters were waiting. She was rushed to a hospital for evaluation. Police say she's "expected to be fine."
