Millennials got an extra boost of nostalgia earlier this week when Big Tigger announced the return of Rap City. On Thursday, the radio and television show host took to Instagram to reveal that the hit hip hop show is set to make a comeback in 2021. Tigger posted a photo of himself on the show's new set, writing:
"This is not a drill… This is not a throwback #RapCity21 ‼️Details soon."
According to reports, the BET show, which ran from 1989 to 2008, will return for one night only, just ahead of the 2021 BET Hip Hop Awards on Tuesday, October 5th. The network announced that Rap City '21, a one hour segment, will premiere before the award show as "a celebration of the network’s commitment to the culture’s past, present and future."
Since it's 1989 debut, Rap City has been the hub for all things hip hop --- dedicated to rap music videos, important cultural commentary, and interviews with some of rap's most groundbreaking stars. Every rapper from the 90's and early 2000's wanted a moment with Big Tigger in the infamous freestyle booth.
Tigger, who hosted the show from 1999 to 2005, is also set to executive produce Rap City 21. He released a statement about the upcoming revival, saying:
“I’m excited at the opportunity to revive this legendary piece of culture! All your favorite stars and their bars on display."
Catch Rap City '21 when it airs on BET October 5 at 8 PM/ET, followed by the 2021 BET Hip Hop Awards. Check out some of the show' s most memorable freestyles below.
