A Florida man is facing charges for allegedly trying to cover up a car crash by reporting it stolen, according to the Volusia Sheriff's Office.

Deputies responded to a Deltona home on Normandy Boulevard around 2 a.m. Sunday (May 22), where they encountered 20-year-old Amador Rodriguez. The man reported his blue Honda Civic stolen out of his driveway after he left it unlocked with his keys and wallet inside Saturday night (May 21), according to the sheriff's office.

Later that Sunday morning, deputies got a call about a hit-and-run crash just a few blocks away. Authorities say they found Rodriguez's Honda Civic partially wedged inside the back of a house on the 1000 block of Normandy Boulevard. There was extensive damage to the home, but luckily, no one was home at the time of the crash, the sheriff's office reported.

Deputies confronted Rodriguez about the incident, and he admitted to lying about his car being stolen and crashing the vehicle himself. Cops allege he also walked back home without reporting the crash nor checking to see if anyone was possibly hurt inside the house. They also noted Rodriguez suffered minor injuries "that appeared to be caused" by the airbag during the crash.

The 20-year-old is now facing charges of leaving the scene of a crash with property damage and providing false information to law enforcement. He was released from Volusia County Jail after posting a $1,500 bond.
