A Wisconsin man has died after being hit by a wheel that came off of a vehicle, according to the Milwaukee Police Department.
The initial incident occurred on Thursday, October 27, according to police. At approximately 9:11 a.m., the front, driver's side wheel came off of a cargo van as it pulled into a turn lane. The wheel then crossed into the opposite lane, bounced, and hit a pedestrian on the 200 block of South 84th Street. No other injuries were reported.
"This is a pretty unusual occurrence," Nick Jarmusz, AAA director of public affairs, told FOX 6 News. "Cases of actual parts of a car coming off and actually hitting someone and injuring them are relatively rare."
As the pedestrian, an 80-year-old West Allis man, fell to the ground, the van's driver got out of the vehicle and ran over to him. The pedestrian was later transported to a local hospital to treat life-threatening injuries. He recently succumbed to those injuries.
"Our sincere condolences go out to the family during this very difficult time," the Milwaukee Police Department wrote in their statement updating residents about the accident.
FOX 6 News reached out to police to ask if any charges would be recommend against the driver of the van, but they only said it is an ongoing investigation. No other information has been given at the time of this writing.
