A Seattle restaurant known for its huge New York-style pizzas announced that it's permanently closing its doors soon after 65 years in business.
Northlake Tavern & Pizza House revealed that it'll serve its last customers on Tuesday, January 31, according to a Saturday (January 7) Facebook post. The restaurant was a popular hub in the University District neighborhood and full of regional mementos and decor.
Chef and owner Abdoullah, who was trained by Northlake's original owner Herb Friedman, explained they're having health issues and plan to retire after working at the restaurant for 42 years.
“I am happy that the Big Mario’s family will continue in the Northlake tradition bringing quality pizza and hospitality to our community on Northlake,” Abdoullah wrote. “I want to say thank you so much for all your help throughout the years. My heart and soul will always be the Northlake Tavern.”
The retiring pizzamaker said he's excited to pass on the pizza board to a new generation of pizza specialists: Big Mario's Pizza. This restaurant chain will take over Northlake's space and plans to reopen in March as an all-ages joint.
“We feel lucky to have had the opportunity to get to know Abdoullah and his brother during this exchange and are actively working side-by-side at the Northlake,” Jason Lajeunesse of Big Mario’s Pizza said. “We plan to keep the core tenants of the Northlake intact, including its amazing decor, but will be adding Big Mario’s hospitality staples such as pull tabs, games, liquor, indoor and outdoor all-ages dining options, classic VHS movies, and finally, Big Mario’s pizza.”
If you want to wish one last goodbye to Northlake Tavern & Pizza House, drop by between now and January 31. They'll also have a farewell closing part on its last day, starting at 5 p.m.
