Nelsonville Music Festival kicked off in the rolling hills of southeast Ohio on Friday, July 19 for a weekend of sunshine and music befitting its setting. Now in its 17th year, the festival has garnered a reputation as the best kept secrets among US music festivals.

The weekend boasted a mostly folk and rock ballot with a handful of international musicians culminating an intimate yet lively environment with a special atmosphere, noted often by performers and festival-goers alike.

Contributing to the atmosphere are the actions taken by organizers to ensure an environmentally and socially supportive event, from ‘Zero Waste’ actions to the of many young local acts including a showcase for Nelsonville’s own Stuart’s Opera House ‘After School Program’ where students participating in the program had the chance to perform on stage for a very welcoming audience. Along with these selected performances, kids under 12 were admitted free of charge and there were areas about the grounds designated for kids which hosted activities throughout the weekend.

Highlight performers included Kurt Vile & the Violators, Lucinda Williams, Alex G, Big Thief, Alvvays, Margo Price, Sierra Ferrel, Altin Gün, Jupiter & Okwess, Wednesday, and MJ Lenderman. Along with two sets from festival staple and favorite, Michael Hurley, whose singular talent provided a through-line of sincerity and light heartedness simultaneously which displayed his storied career as a songwriter.

NMF’s mission is not one of economical viability for shareholders sake but one with goals of benefitting its local communities. According to the festival site, “All festival proceeds benefit arts education in Southeastern Ohio, meaning every ticket purchased helps to enrich the lives of children with limited access to educational resources.” This atmosphere is what attracts musicians and festival-goers alike to one of the most special musical events in the US.
