Tate McRae is reacting to the "crazy" yet "flattering" remarks fans have been making comparing her career to an iconic pop star.
The 21-year-old singer/dancer is making her mark in pop, most recently with her latest album So Close to What, and some people have compared her talent to that of Britney Spears, per People. While many performers would revel in the comparisons, McRae is surprised to have her name on the same level as someone she views as being "the blueprint." In a recent interview with The Independent, she explained why she finds the conversations "flattering and scary."
"It's such a crazy statement because no one can compare to Britney Spears," she said. "It's like comparing someone to Michael Jackson! That's the blueprint!"
McRae has even drawn inspiration from the princess of pop in the past, telling People in 2023 that the choreography in the music video for her song "Exes" was inspired by her "queen" Spears and Christina Aguilera.
"We were obviously taking inspiration from the greats, like Britney and Christina, and really wanted to just do a full dance music video," she said. "I've been dreaming of doing a dance music video with full choreography — dance being the most prominent thing in the music video — for so long. So that definitely referenced some of my biggest idols."
Dance was definitely at the forefront of her latest music video for "Revolving door," which she has called one of her favorite videos. She also noted the eye-catching way the video represents the rest of the album.
