Gwyneth Paltrow is helping her children avoid the same "mistakes" she made in her past.
Speaking to People at the Gwyneth Paltrow X Genesis House "The Forest Within" exhibition in New York City on Thursday (May 8), the Shakespeare in Love star revealed the advice she has been sharing with daughter Apple, 20, and son Moses, 19, whom she shares with ex-husband Chris Martin. She is also a stepmother to husband Brad Falchuk's son Brody and daughter Isabella.
"I think I really encourage them to be true to themselves and, like, to do what feels right to them," she said. "I think like all the mistakes I made were being talked in or out of something."
Paltrow explains how she wants to support her children as they discover their true selves, saying, "I really want them, even if I don't agree with it, like, I want them to be really true to their purpose and their individuality. [Apple] still has another year of college, so, you know, I'm like right, soak it in, and you know, it goes really fast."
The Marvel actress, who previously opened up about the "grief" of having an empty nest, also shared that she has still been able to see her children, even as her family is more spread out now as her kids are attending college hundreds of miles apart while she is also managing her own busy schedule.
"I've actually been able to see them more. You know, my son's on, they're both on the East Coast — well, he's on the East Coast and she's southeast. And I did a film here in the fall, and it was great 'cause I got to see my son and stepson, who were just very close by quite a lot, which was really nice."
Fortunately for Paltrow, she'll get more mom time with her kids shortly as they have both wrapped up the school year and will be "coming home" soon, and she for one "can't wait."
